During the NATO Summit, the Belarusian leader met with Hakeem Jeffries, the Leader of the Democratic Caucus in the US House of Representatives.
During the meeting, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya thanked Mr. Jeffries and other House members for supporting the Belarusian people and the solidarity campaigns for political prisoners in Belarus. She also discussed the latest sentences in Belarus and the repression against Belarusians in exile.
The Belarusian leader urged the Congress to pass a new edition of the Belarus Democracy Act and increase support for civil society, the repressed, as well as independent journalists, cultural projects, and initiatives. Mr. Jeffries and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya discussed cooperation with major tech companies like Facebook and Google in the fight against disinformation.
The politicians also talked about the “election” campaign scheduled for 2025 in Belarus. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya noted that it cannot be called an election, as it will be neither free nor democratic. The parties also discussed the regime’s circumvention of sanctions and ways to close loopholes and hold the regime accountable.
