Today, the Lukashenka regime adopted amendments to the Law on the President of the Republic of Belarus.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “In the last couple of days, people have been discussing Lukashenka’s health problems, claiming he has a hoarse voice or is losing it. I am not aware of what the doctors say about his condition. But it has been clear since 2020 that the dictator lost the right to speak on behalf of Belarusians. Now he is trying to bolster his political immunity, which is weakening every day.
With the new law, Lukashenka aims to shield himself from legal prosecution because he already fears an inevitable future. After all, the actions he has taken in the last 30 years are punishable not just by a fine. Evidence of his crimes is enough for a prison sentence lasting decades.
Belarus’ democratic forces work every day to bring Lukashenka to account for all crimes against humanity and war crimes. Together, we will make sure that the dictator faces trial. The man who shattered the lives of thousands of Belarusians will face punishment under international law, and no immunity will protect him. It’s only a matter of time”.
