In an interview with the Ukrainian TV channel FREEDOM, the Belarusian leader shared her feelings about being in politics and discussed fatigue from the struggle, her views on the Russian opposition, and competition within the democratic forces.
Here are some quotes from the conversation:
📌 “Politics hasn’t really become something I feel connected to. I know I have to do this so that the Belarusian people can have Belarus back, the father of my children comes back to us, and thousands of torn-apart families reunite”.
📌 “I learned by doing, without any political education. I learned from the best – presidents and prime ministers. That’s how it went. I haven’t become hardhearted. I’m an ordinary Belarusian and I stay true to what an ordinary Belarusian would expect from my work”.
📌 “We must keep reminding the world about ourselves and shouting about our pain. Hearing so often about fatigue has made me develop fatigue of this fatigue”.
📌 “We’re all standing together. Here’s what I tell my colleagues: Let the competition begin and everyone start fighting after a new, fair election. But now isn’t the time. We have the same enemy and it’s not each other. We must fight the enemy”.
📌 “I’m not in any competition because I’ve stated from the very beginning: My goal is to hold a new, fair election in Belarus. I won’t participate in it, so there’s no need to compete with me. I’m a tool in your hands. My position is: Don’t fight me, stand beside me. I’m not superior to you but alongside you. The fact that I haven’t developed any political ambitions probably helps in this too”.
📌 “It certainly won’t be easy. I’m preparing Belarusians for the fact that at a certain point, they might even feel disappointed because Belarus is heavily in debt. We will have to rebuild our entire economy. We can’t plan out all the scenarios now but we are working on the general concepts”.
