A meeting was held in Vilnius to discuss the recent EU restrictions on cars with Belarusian license plates. It was attended by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Chief Advisor, Franak Viacorka, Advisor on Youth Policy and Students, Marharyta Vorykhava, and Vice Speaker of the Coordination Council, Stanislava Hlinnik. Representatives from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia included ambassadors, special envoys, and ministry officials responsible for sanctions.
The diplomats noted that the new restrictions were introduced in accordance with the EU regulations to increase border security and close the loopholes used by the regime to circumvent sanctions.
The representatives of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office emphasized that the new restrictions affect Belarusians rather than the regime, negatively impacting people’s mobility. Additionally, the advisors conveyed proposals for possible exceptions that could be made for cars driven by Belarusian citizens.
What key issues were raised during the meeting?
📌 Restrictions on the transport of goods introduced by new sanctions. Lithuania and Poland have allowed the transport of goods for personal use, without labels and packaging.
📌 Maintaining and supporting passenger traffic. Bus connections will remain unchanged.
📌 Procedures for re-registering cars with European license plates for Belarusians who have residence permits or humanitarian visas.
