The UN Special Rapporteur plays a crucial role in the fight for human rights in Belarus by independently monitoring the human rights situation in the country and providing regular recommendations for improvement. Additionally, the Special Rapporteur tracks Belarus’ compliance with its international human rights obligations.
Today, at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Nils Muižnieks, a human rights protection expert with 25 years of experience, was appointed as the new Special Rapporteur on Belarus. He has served as the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, headed the Amnesty International’s European Institutions Office, and collaborated with Belarusian human rights defenders. Previously, the role of UN Special Rapporteur on Belarus was held by Anaïs Marin.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office:
“Nils Muižnieks’ experience and expertise will carry forward the vital work of improving the human rights situation in Belarus. We are grateful to him for taking on this challenging yet immensely important task. This mandate contributes significantly to protecting the rights of Belarusians who have suffered from political repression and state terror in Belarus.
Let us also thank Anaïs Marin. Her independent, dedicated, and tireless work has brought global awareness to the systemic violations occurring daily in Belarus. Her efforts in defending Belarusians’ rights have made a significant contribution to the fight for justice in our country”.
