  • Franak Viacorka: “This visit puts the Belarusian issue back on UN agenda”

    February 29, 2024

In the new video address, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Chief Advisor, Franak Viacorka, shares details of the Belarusian leader’s visit to Geneva, where she has addressed delegations from over 50 countries. Mr. Viacorka notes that this was important as Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s address was heard both by delegations from democratic countries and representatives of some countries that have been avoiding taking a stance on Belarus.

The advisor also reveals that next month the UN Human Rights Council will consider the resolution on Belarus, which will determine the UN’s subsequent actions vis-a-vis the country:

“In this resolution, we propose to secure two mandates: a UN special rapporteur on Belarus and an expert group tasked with gathering evidence of the regime’s crimes and seeking to hold it accountable. If the resolution gets adopted through voting, we will have more chances to achieve the release of political prisoners and hold all perpetrators accountable”.
