Sanctions: Actual Impact and Importance for Belarus
The undemocratic government of Belarus and Aliaksandr Lukashenka in person, because he refused to follow the will of the Belarusian people after the elections, numerous human rights violations in the country, and large-scale repressions against the Belarusians were subjected to unprecedented sanctions pressure from the EU, the United States, and other democratic countries.
Sanctions are one of the few tools in the arsenal of the international democratic community that demonstrates the unacceptability of such a situation and forces the undemocratic government to end its repression.
However, sanctions raise many questions and controversies in terms of their effectiveness, impact, and political and economic results. How much can the sanctions really change the behavior of Aliaksandr Lukashenka and the authoritarian government of Belarus? What geopolitical effect will they have? Will the sanctions push Belarus even more towards Russia? And how will they affect ordinary citizens of Belarus?
These and other issues will be discussed during the expert discussion organized by the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
