Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's Advisor for the Constitutional Reform and Interparliamentary Cooperation, Anatoli Liabedzka, met with Thórhildur Sunna Ævarsdóttir, a member of the Icelandic Parliament and PACE General Rapporteur, to discuss the persecution of Belarusians for their opposition to the war in Ukraine.
“The subject of Ms. Ævarsdóttir’s report is disturbing because it touches on the conflict of interests between Belarusians, 95% of whom oppose the idea of sending compatriots to fight in Ukraine, and the pro-Putin ruling elite. This conflict generates boundless repression and impunity for the regime’s law enforcement officials. It is crucial for us to see the final version of the report and the deputy's recommendations.
At the meeting, we also discussed in detail the idea of establishing a fund to support political prisoners and the possible provision of the infrastructure, once used for the rehabilitation of children from Chornobyl-affected regions, for the rehabilitation of families of political prisoners”, commented Mr. Liabedzka.
