Yury Harauski used to be a part of Lukashenka's “death squad” and is now being tried under universal jurisdiction in Switzerland.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Dictators like to use enforced disappearances. More than 30 such disappearances have been documented during Lukashenka's rule. A guilty verdict against Yury Harauski will also be an indictment for Lukashenka. This could be a turning point that closes the door to impunity, regardless of borders or time elapsed.
Every time I meet with our democratic partners, I emphasize the need for accountability and support for Belarusian CSOs that provide assistance to victims, document crimes, and hold perpetrators accountable. And I am grateful to Switzerland for setting this precedent. I hope we will see more cases under universal jurisdiction against the regime’s henchmen and achieve justice together”.
