In the presence of the Foreign Ministers, the Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrel, thanked Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, assured her of his support, and announced that the EU would be imposing sanctions against the regime today. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called for determination and stated that “Belarus unites all Europe”.
Prior to the meeting, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya had an informal meeting with the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Spain, Denmark, Poland, Sweden and Slovakia, as well as with Josep Borrel.
Statements in support of Ms. Tsikhanouskaya were made by representatives of Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and European Commissioner Oliver Vargelius. Support was also expressed by Bulgaria, Lithuania and Greece. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya noted that it is now particularly important to support people in Belarus –strikes, workers, journalists.
