The Belarusian leader received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Thordis Gudmundsdottir, in her office in Vilnius. She informed the minister about the catastrophic situation with Belarusian political prisoners and the need for a coordinated international strategy for their release. During the meeting, they talked about the threats to Belarusian independence, Russia's efforts to absorb Belarus, and mechanisms to hold the regime accountable through international mechanisms and courts.
The Icelandic Minister assured Ms. Tsikhanouskaya of Iceland’s continuous support for the Belarusian civil society, including independent media and the European Humanities University in Vilnius.
“I am deeply grateful to the Minister for all the support that Iceland provides to us. Iceland demonstrates how much one country can do. Thank you for inviting democratic Belarus to participate in the Council of Europe's Summit, and for supporting every initiative of ours in the international arena”, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said.
