  • Belarusians will retain their right to vote in local elections in Estonia

    September 22, 2023

Anatoli Liabedzka, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor for the Constitutional Reform and Interparliamentary Cooperation, announced that Estonia has removed from the agenda the proposal to deprive Belarusians living in the country of the right to vote in local elections:

“During consultations with Marko Mihkelson, the Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu, a legal appraisal was conducted to determine whether banning Belarusian citizens from voting is in line with the Constitution of Estonia. We were assured that following the appraisal, the issue lost its relevance and any political prospects.

This is not only good news, but also a lesson on how democracy and the rule of law should work. In Estonia, the Constitution has the highest legal force and protects the rights of everyone who resides in the country. In this sense, Estonia strongly contrasts with Belarus, where the Constitution has become inferior to the decrees and directives of the illegitimate ruler.”
