  • Results of the Belarusian Anti-War Movement for May 7

    May 08, 2022

Any Belarusian can join the Movement and choose from numerous options to resist the war and Belarus' regime.

Here is an overview of the Movement on May 7.

    Support for Ukrainians and Belarusians

    • Belarusians in Maladzechna district laid flowers in memory of the Ukrainians who died during the war.
    • The Run for Ukraine Batumi charity semi-marathon will take place in Georgia on May 14. The event is held at the initiative of the Batumi Running Community and its partners.
    • The Belarusian Youth Hub in Warsaw hosted a charity concert of Zmicier Vaitsiushkevich. All proceeds will be used to purchase medicines and humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
    • Belarusians of the Prague Support Team in Czechia sent equipment to Belarusian volunteers in Odesa.
    • On May 11, Belarusian comedian Slava Kamisaranka will hold a benefit concert in Warsaw in support of Ukraine.
    • Pavel Latushka held a meeting with Małgorzata Kosiura-Kaźmierska, Director of the Eastern Department of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Foreign Ministry Commissioner for Poland's presidency in the OSCE in 2022. Following the meeting, Mr. Latushka, head of the National Anti-Crisis Management, announced that Poland will continue supporting Belarusians and will not stop exerting pressure on the regime.
    • Belarusian Volha Buda, who lives and works in Gdansk, Poland, organized a fundraiser for Ukrainians. About 300 people joined it in two months and Volha managed to raise $6,000. She bought and sent to Ukraine baby food, medicines, sleeping bags and other items.
    • Belarusian women in Vilnius marched across the city with white-red-white umbrellas.
    • U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central and Eastern Europe Robin Dunigan and U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus Julie Fischer met at the Belarusian House in Vilnius with Belarusians who were forced to leave their homes under pressure.
    • Belarusians in London held a rally to support Ukraine.

    Resistance

    • Belarusians continue expressing their protest against Russian aggression and the war in Ukraine in every way possible. They painted anti-war messages in their towns and cities and hung ribbons in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
    • Partisans in Minsk painted Belarusian national flags and wrote messages expressing their attitude to the regime and its media.

    Sabotage

    • The Hajun project, which monitors the movements of Russian troops in Belarus, released an operational summary for the day.
    • Hajun also reviewed the Belarusian propaganda narratives about the war in Ukraine. As the Victory Day is approaching, when Belarusians and the rest of the world celebrate the end of the Second World War, propagandists remembered the veterans in Belarus and talked about “Nazis” in Ukraine.

    Awareness campaign

    • The new issue of the Belaruski Vestnik underground press outlet covers the regime’s ostensible care for the veterans on the eve of Victory Day, speculation on the holiday, and more. Belarusians distribute underground press as leaflets and newspapers to counter state propaganda.
    • The Honest Newspaper also released a new issue. It shows how Belarusians help Ukraine, explains why trade unions complain about low salaries at state enterprises, and tells how many Russian soldiers have already died in Ukraine.
