Today, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held a meeting with the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
During the meeting, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya :
– Told about Victor Babariko’s conviction and about other trials of Belarusians. All innocent people must be released — this can be done under the Rehabilitation Act.
– Proposed a concept of how the Belarusian people can be represented in the Eastern Partnership, since Lukashenko has withdrawn from the program. It also proposed that democratic forces should represent Belarus at the Eastern Partnership Summit.
– When Mr. Michel asked about the unity of the power bloc and the democratic forces, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya replied that there had been no unity among the security forces for a long time and that the democratic forces continued to work together for the same purpose: “We understand from our interaction with the security forces that they see only violence and no future in the regime. They know very well that their future is democratic change».
– Stated that there was a need to expand programs to help political prisoners and their families, independent media and private business, as well as the EU Plan for a new Belarus. It is also important now that Ukraine join the EU sanctions and that loopholes in sanctions are closed — then there will be no way for the regime to circumvent them.
– Called for support to the EU-level conference to resolve the crisis in Belarus.
