Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Today, Eduard Babaryka spends his third birthday in detention, at the detention center on Valadarskaha street in Minsk. You know, I think the trumped-up case against Eduard reflects well the essence of the repressive machine in Belarus. Eduard has been kept hostage for almost 1000 days just because he is the son of a particular father. Because he supported his father in his legal right to be elected to public office. Because he supported Belarusians in their basic right to vote for their candidates in a fair and democratic election.
The regime holds Eduard hostage to pressure Viktar Babaryka and all of us. To make Belarusians afraid to speak out in the face of the regime’s willingness to take revenge on both its opponents and their loved ones. We have seen such senseless revenge many times. Darya and Ihar Losik, both parents of a little girl, are behind bars. A 15-year-old boy has been taken hostage to pressure his relative, who runs a protest Telegram channel.
I want to support Eduard, his family, his friends, and all the hostages of the regime who deserve to get out of prisons and see a free Belarus. And each of us has to work to make that dream of Belarus come true”.
