  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held talks with UK Foreign Secretary

    October 19, 2023

On the last day of her visit to London, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held talks with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and other representatives of the Foreign Office.

The Belarusian leader urged the United Kingdom to adhere to a differentiated policy: on the one hand, supporting Belarusians, and on the other hand, increasing pressure on the Lukashenka regime.

During the talks, sanctions policy was discussed. Following the discussion, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya handed over proposals to the United Transitional Cabinet aimed at making sanctions even more painful for the regime and closing loopholes in them.

They spoke separately about sanctions against the National Olympic Committee of Belarus and support for athletes who spoke out against the regime and the war.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya urged the UK government to facilitate cases against the Lukashenka regime in the International Criminal Court and under universal jurisdiction – for the regime's complicity in the war, repression against Belarusians, and displacement of Ukrainian children.

At the end of the meeting, Ms. Tsikhanouskaya urged the UK to appoint a representative for contacts with democratic Belarus and asked for continued support for Belarusian civil society and independent media.
