  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the President, the Speaker of Parliament, and party leaders: outcome of the second day of the working visit to Slovenia

    Today, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, the Speaker of Parliament, the President of the National Assembly, Igor Zorčič, and leaders of the main political parties of Slovenia.

    During the meetings:

    – Slovenia’s future EU presidency was discussed. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called on Slovenia to make Belarus a priority during the six-month presidency in the EU council, to support maximum pressure on the regime to end repression and to release political prisoners;

    – the need to support Belarusian civil society at the EU level was discussed, as well as the development of bilateral relations between Slovenia and Belarus;

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called for support of independent media in Belarus, sending letters to political prisoners and Slovenian deputies to take patronage of political prisoners. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya also stressed the importance of working with the Belarusian diaspora in Slovenia;

    – leader of democratic Belarus drew attention to the continuing cooperation of some Slovenian companies with the regime and its associated purses. She called on companies to refrain from cooperating with State enterprises that violate workers' rights and are subjected to Western sanctions;

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called on the Speaker of the Parliament Zorčič and the deputies' parties to create a parliamentary group of friends of Belarus, so that the issue of Belarus would be on the constant agenda, especially during Slovenia’s EU presidency;

    – President Pahor and Slovenian parliamentarians asked during the meetings about the situation in Belarusian prisons, incidents of violence, how evidence of the regime’s crimes is gathered, and about officials and security forces. Politicians also inquired about the situation of the Belarusian language and the importance of supporting national identity in Belarus.

    “I am impressed by how many friends Belarusians have in Slovenia. I hope Slovenia will make the Belarusian issue a priority during the EU presidency. And I am sure that Belarusians and Slovenes will be friends, cooperate as nations of free countries – after the changes in Belarus”, said Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
