  • Aliaksandr Shlyk: “What we have in recent weeks in Belarus shouldn’t distract us from the main goal – democratic transformation through elections”

    June 03, 2021

The two-day International Conference “Democratic Elections for Resolution of Crisis in Belarus” was concluded. On the first day, the conference was addressed by Vice-President of the European Parliament Klara Dobrev, Secretary-General of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Roberto Montella, Secretary-General of the International IDEA Kevin Casas-Zamora, Pavel Latushka, Volha Kavalkova, Franak Viacorka, and other politicians and representatives of democratic forces.

The second day saw a debate on electoral reform. It was attended by the Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia Tamar Zhvania and other election experts.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's Representative on Elections Aliaksandr Shlyk: “The Conference showed three essential things:

    1. The solution to the crisis is possible through negotiations. Only in this way will we arrive at a solution that will satisfy everyone in Belarus.

    2. Belarus can hold fair and free elections – we need the political will we are fighting for, and we already have the knowledge and ability.

    3. Many ideas have emerged at this conference – we are preparing new mini-conferences to discuss all these proposals.

What we have seen in recent weeks in Belarus shouldn't distract us from the main objective – democratic transformation through elections. We need to be technically and legally prepared and to do that, we need to talk now about concrete ideas, solutions, and mechanisms for new elections. We are grateful to the CEC and experts from other countries for their support and experience. We are ready to continue to discuss all ideas openly and transparently”.
