  • “The Deployment of Nuclear Weapons in Belarus and its Implications for Regional Security». Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held an expert side event during NATO Summit

    July 13, 2023

Yesterday, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held a second side event on Belarus during the NATO Summit in Vilnius. The Belarusian leader started by speaking about the death of political prisoner Ales Pushkin.

Regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, Tsikhanouskaya emphasized the following: “The deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus is not just an internal issue, but a threat to global security. Unfortunately, the response of the international community to this threat is insufficient”.

She proposed convening a UN Security Council meeting, raising the issue at the UN General Assembly, and imposing sanctions against Russia for deploying nuclear weapons in Belarus.

“We hope that, together with Ukrainians, we will gain our freedom and free ourselves from Russia’s claws as a result of this war. No weapon can kill our desire to be free,” noted Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

The side event featured speeches by former US Deputy Secretary Biegun, senior director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center Ambassador Herbst, and Chairman of Munich Security Conference Ambassador Heusgen. Representatives of the United Transitional Cabinet, diplomats, and experts also participated in the event.
