MEETING WITH THE DAVOLI ASSOCIATION OF FORMER BELARUSIAN POLITICAL PRISONERS
On July 30, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with members of the DaVoli Association of Former Belarusian Political Prisoners in Warsaw. The parties discussed the challenges faced by former political prisoners and their families, as well as possible support, rehabilitation, and the protection of the rights of people who have endured political repression. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya answered the participants’ questions.
EDS SUMMER UNIVERSITY 2026
On July 31, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke at the European Democrat Students’ Summer University 2026 in Warsaw. The event brought together young leaders, politicians, and experts from across Europe, including representatives of European youth political organizations, experts, and Polish politicians. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya stressed that Belarus’s future is inseparable from the security of the entire region.
MIKITA MELKAZIORAU CUP
On August 1, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya attended the opening of the Mikita Melkaziorau Cup. She joined the tournament’s participants and guests to honor the journalist’s memory with a minute of silence before symbolically kicking off the competition with the tournament’s first kick. The opening ceremony was also attended by Pavel Latushka, Aliaksandr Ivulin, and representatives of FC Pahonia and the Embassy of the Netherlands.
ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION OF SOVEREIGNTY
On July 27, Belarus marked the anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, adopted in 1990. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed Belarusians on this occasion: “It was the result of a national awakening. After Chornobyl happened, after the truth about Kurapaty came to light, and as freedom movements spread across neighboring countries, more and more Belarusians came to realize that we had the right to be an independent nation. Belarus has the right to exist — not as an appendage to someone else’s empire but as a home for its own people”.
In addition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Education and Science, Pavel Tereshkovich, reflected on the historical significance of the declaration: “There is another reason why this history matters today. The ‘window of opportunity’ that many have been discussing in recent weeks may emerge from an entirely unexpected and improbable chain of events. And we must be prepared when it does”.
AUGUST 9 EVENTS
August 9 marks a turning point in modern Belarusian history. Ahead of the anniversary of the 2020 peaceful protests, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office compiled a list of public events taking place in different countries.
35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MEDININKAI MASSACRE
On July 31, Dzianis Kuchynski, as the Director of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office in Vilnius and the leader’s Diplomatic Advisor, attended a commemorative event marking the 35th anniversary of the Medininkai Massacre. On the night of July 31, 1991, armed men stormed the Medininkai border checkpoint and shot eight Lithuanian customs and police officers; only one survived. “We stand with Lithuania in preserving the memory of those who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of their country”, Mr. Kuchynski noted.
NEW BELARUS CONFERENCE
On August 7, the New Belarus Conference will begin in Warsaw with a series of side events. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office published the full program for the first day, featuring public discussions, presentations, and meetings dedicated to Belarus’s future.
