  • “Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Viasna Human Rights Center”

    April 27, 2026

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Viasna Human Rights Center. Thirty years ago, this organization emerged because someone had to stand on the side of people when the state abandoned that role. Unfortunately, over all these years, the state has never returned to the people’s side. But Viasna has never left it.

In today’s Belarus, people pay for human rights work with their freedom. They risk everything to document the truth and defend those who need help. It is impossible to fully measure the contribution Viasna has already made — and continues to make — to the lives of thousands of Belarusians.

A few days ago, I attended a ceremony dedicated to Viasna’s anniversary. It was heartening to see new faces among human rights defenders, lawyers, and volunteers — people younger than the organization itself, yet already contributing to this shared cause. It is unfortunate that many of you have to work anonymously and cannot receive the public recognition you deserve. But please know: we are deeply grateful to you. It is thanks to you that Viasna remains a symbol of conscience and support.

It is especially encouraging to see those who were unjustly convicted in Belarus regain their freedom and return to human rights work: Valiantsin Stefanovich, Uladzimir Labkovich, Ales Bialiatski, Marfa Rabkova, Nasta Loika, Leanid Sudalenka, Andrei Chapiuk… Seeing you resume helping people without hesitation inspires deep admiration and respect.

Thank you to each and every one of you for these 30 years. We cannot build a normal future without people who are devoted to defending others. And as long as human rights are disregarded and lawlessness prevails in the country, we will continue this work — together”.
