    March 09, 2026

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the European Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius, in Brussels. The discussion focused on the current military and political situation, the humanitarian track for the release of political prisoners led by the United States, and the place of Belarus in the future European security architecture.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya proposed that the European Union approach Belarus with long-term strategic interests in mind, ensuring that Belarus has a role in the EU’s future security strategy.

She emphasized that the European Union and Ukraine have a strong interest in a “democratic, independent, European Belarus”, as it aligns with their vital security interests. The future of Belarus directly affects the security of the entire region. It is important to start thinking now about how to free Belarus from total dependence on Russia and return it to a democratic development path.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya shared information on the work of democratic forces in the security field, handed over the Red Paper on the EU–Belarus security framework, and discussed cooperation with Ukraine, including her planned visit to Kyiv. The conversation also covered the role of Belarusian volunteer fighters and their contribution to Ukraine’s defense.

She noted that Belarusians and the democratic forces stand ready to engage in European security programs and emphasized that “a secure European Union also means a secure Belarus”.
