On November 6, 2025, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, at his office in Canberra. This is the first time an Australian Prime Minister has received a Belarusian politician at this level.
President Albanese expressed full support for the people and the democratic forces of Belarus. The parties discussed the situation in Belarus, Russia’s war against Ukraine, support for those repressed, and sanctions. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called for distinguishing between the regime and the Belarusian people, and between Belarus and Russia.
She thanked the Prime Minister and the Australian government for their principled support for Ukraine and attention to the situation in Belarus.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya also spoke about the challenges facing the Belarusian diaspora in Australia and highlighted shared historical ties. They discussed opportunities for establishing contacts with countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “It was an honest and warm conversation. The Prime Minister is interested in the situation in Belarus and Ukraine and is very concerned about the fate of political prisoners. I thanked the Prime Minister and the Australian people for their support of Ukraine and Belarus. I am confident that this meeting will take our cooperation with Australia to a new level and help us work more effectively”.
Australia actively participates in international organizations such as the UN, frequently speaks out on Belarus-related issues, and is part of the G20.
