Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Pavel Latushka met with the new Minister of Justice of Lithuania, Rimantas Mockus.
The discussion focused on efforts to hold the Lukashenka regime accountable, including Lithuania’s referral of the regime’s crimes to the International Criminal Court (ICC), and coordination with other countries on these efforts. The parties agreed to establish ongoing communication between the United Transitional Cabinet and the Ministry of Justice to address these priorities.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya expressed gratitude to Lithuania and its government for supporting Belarusian civil society. Mr. Mockus assured the Belarusian side that a democratic and independent Belarus remains one of Lithuania’s new government’s priorities.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “I am grateful to the Minister of Justice for his principled stance, consistency, and courage. I am confident that together, we can achieve significant progress in restoring law and justice in Belarus and bringing the regime’s criminals to account”.
Pavel Latushka: “This was our first meeting with Lithuania’s new Minister of Justice. In just the second week of his tenure, he initiated discussions on potential cooperation regarding urgent issues. The main topic was further collaboration linked to Lithuania’s appeal to the ICC to investigate the situation in Belarus, specifically regarding cross-border crimes against humanity.
We should emphasize that Lithuania will continue its proactive efforts – one of the new government’s priorities – to ensure that Lukashenka and his accomplices are held accountable through various international mechanisms.
Additionally, 30 non-governmental organizations expressed their readiness to submit information to the ICC Prosecutor confirming the regime’s perpetration of cross-border crimes against humanity, both within Belarus and in EU countries”.
