During the meeting with Eric Nussbaumer, the Belarusian leader emphasized the issue of political prisoners in Belarus and recent deaths behind bars, stressed Russia’s creeping occupation of Belarus, and called for joint efforts with the EU to exert pressure on the regime.
The parties also discussed creating a Belarus friendship group in the Swiss Federal Assembly (Parliament) and its joining the international Alliance of Parliamentary Groups “For a Democratic Belarus”, which already includes 24 countries.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called on Switzerland to support democratic Belarus in parliamentary assemblies and proposed hearings on Belarus in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council.
Additionally, the Belarusian leader discussed the international support campaign for political prisoners in Belarus. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya urged Mr. Nussbaumer to join more than 400 MPs from different countries and become a symbolic godparent for one of the political prisoners.
At the end of the meeting, the Belarusian leader invited Mr. Nussbaumer and Swiss MPs to visit Vilnius and Warsaw, where they could meet with the families of political prisoners, former prisoners, as well as with the Belarusian civil society and media.
