  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Despite usurped power and terrifying repression in Belarus, we still have warm memories of home”

    June 20, 2024

In an extensive interview with the Polish Kanal Zero, the Belarusian leader talked about her longing for her homeland and warm memories, emphasized the responsibility of Belarusians for changes in the country, and called for rejecting the notion that everything in the country is decided by one person.

📌 “I miss Belarus. It’s my homeland, where my grandparents live and where the house in the village where I spent every summer is. My parents are there, as well as the apartment that is now confiscated. My husband and I put up wallpapers in it with our own hands and decorated it. I miss that, but you always miss the people more. You want to go back but you can’t”.

📌 “Despite usurped power and terrifying repression in Belarus, we still have warm memories of home. We remember the streets we walked and our favorite places. Many friends of ours are still there. When we think about them, we can’t help but smile. It’s a sad smile, though full of hope”.

📌 “We need to reject the model entrenched by the dictatorship, where we are used to one person deciding everything and everyone else obeys. Today everyone is responsible for changes in the country. Everyone is responsible for the independence of our state and for getting people out of prison. Everyone must contribute”.

📌 “I have the opportunity to meet with world leaders, prime ministers, and presidents. I can open doors through which Belarusians then have to pass. That’s why it’s so important for the Belarusian diaspora to engage in politics in all countries”.
