The Belarusian leader spoke at the panel discussion “Where Is Freedom of Expression Going?” where she discussed the risks Belarusians within the country face while trying to obtain honest information. She called on politicians from democratic countries to take decisive action to counter dictators.
“What assistance do we seek from the international political forces? Decisive action, above all. We see that the lack of political will is perceived by dictators as weakness. And they begin to feel impunity. In Belarus, every day, the regime throws 15-20 people behind bars because they do not agree with Lukashenka’s policies. Does the world know about this? No. Because there is no independent press in the country, and we cannot show the world images of what is happening. It is important for international media to collaborate with the democratic forces of Belarus and shed light on what is happening in our country”.
