  • Releasing political prisoners, distinguishing between Belarusians and regime: Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke at Delphi Economic Forum

    April 12, 2024

The Belarusian leader became one of the speakers at a major international event in Greece. The Delphi Economic Forum traditionally gathers influential leaders from various spheres – politics, business, technology, journalism – from around the world. They discuss the most pressing contemporary issues, from macroeconomic trends to climate change and IT innovations.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke in a section on the geopolitical situation in the world. The section also featured Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, and journalist Anne Applebaum.

In her speech, the leader talked about the situation with political prisoners in Belarus – and called on the world and international organizations to exert maximum efforts to free political prisoners. She emphasized the possible ways to hold the regime accountable for its crimes against Belarusians – and outlined steps that could be taken to weaken Lukashenka’s dictatorship.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya also talked about the activities of independent initiatives and organizations, including the United Transitional Cabinet, and called for supporting Belarus’ civil society and independent media.

The leader addressed the Western strategy vis-a-vis Belarus. She proposed that the international community differentiate between Belarusians and Lukashenka’s regime (“isolating the dictator, not the people”), continue issuing visas, and support those who have fled political persecution.
