The book “Zekameron” is a collection of stories written by Maksim Znak while in prison. It has already been published in several European countries in Belarusian, Russian and German, and is coming out in English and Swedish.
Besides Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the book presentation was attended by Maksim Znak's associate and former political prisoner Illia Salei, literary critic Iryna Herasimovich, political scientist Yauhen Kryzhanouski, and former Austrian Ambassador to Belarus Aloisia Wörgetter.
In her speech, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya noted: “Maksim Znak’s book doesn't mention names. If you think about it, his heroes are all of us, Belarusians who, in one way or another, themselves or through their repressed relatives, have been held hostage to this regime. Any one of us could have been in prison now”.
She spoke about the situation of political prisoners and called for supporting the families of political prisoners financially, as well as raising awareness about Belarus: “Let's support them and their families with money, write them letters of solidarity – by hand or via the Internet, like at the web-pages of Viasna or Dissidentby. Let's remind the whole world of what's happening in Belarus. And that without a free Belarus, there will be no peace and security in Europe”.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya thanked the representatives from Austria, Lithuania, and Luxembourg for helping organize and participating in the book presentation.
