During the meeting, Mr. Kristersson and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya discussed Lukashenka’s recent decree discontinuing passport renewal at diplomatic missions abroad. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya asked the Prime Minister to look for a solution that would help Belarusians legalize their stay in Sweden and the EU. She also talked about the project of a new Belarusian passport and called on Sweden to support this initiative.
The Prime Minister said that Sweden will continue to support democratic Belarus. The parties discussed the participation of democratic Belarus in international organizations and the European perspective for Belarus. “There should be no policy of empty chairs. Belarusians must have a voice,” noted Ms. Tsikhanouskaya.
The Belarusian leader asked the Swedish PM to support programs for the rehabilitation of political prisoners, independent media, and cultural projects.
