Today, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Kristina Rikhter, her Advisor on Legal Affairs, participated in the international conference “Responsibility of Lukashenka’s Regime for Crimes Against Humanity and Migrant Crisis: Prospects for International Justice”.
Kristina Rikhter explains about the conference and the issues raised: “The conference discussed the Lukashenka regime’s crimes that may be prosecuted and mechanisms to hold the regime accountable. These include criminal cases under universal jurisdiction, the International Criminal Court, the UN’s International Court of Justice, and a special or hybrid tribunal.
During the conference, we agreed on practical steps to be taken in the future. In my speech, I stressed that delayed justice is failed justice. Therefore, we need to both gather evidence and work toward action, as well as strive for commencement of criminal cases and international justice mechanisms”.
