  • Joint statement by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Czech Minister for Education Petr Gazdik following the negotiations in Prague

    May 13, 2022

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports fully supports the endeavors of Belarusian civil society and will continue to assist the repressed students and researchers dismissed on political grounds by providing scholarships and residence permits for study or internships.

The Ministry also assured the Belarusian side that Czech universities will continue to admit Belarusian applicants who meet the required terms. For study programs, considered “risky” by the Financial Analytical Office, the universities will evaluate the applications on a case-by-case basis in order to fully protect students’ legitimate interests.

Students from Belarus already enrolled in such programs cannot be expelled because of citizenship. All cases of those studying in “risky” programs will be examined on an individual basis, and restrictions for specific students can be applied only in limiting cases, if a threat to the interests of the Czech Republic or the European Union is confirmed. And in such cases, universities are advised to offer an alternative method of study, e.g. another program or individual curriculum.

The Ministry will urge universities and colleges to prevent discrimination against Belarusian students in academic fields based on their nationality or citizenship.
