  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s speech at the rally in Stockholm, 2023

    September 11, 2023

    Dear friends,

Let me begin with the words of one of Sweden's great heroes, Raoul Wallenberg. Once, he said, “To me, there's no other choice”.

These are simple words, but they tell of a great dedication to doing what's right, no matter the cost. He showed what one human being can do to fight evil.

Through generations, Swedish people have demonstrated extraordinary solidarity with those in need. Sweden has set an example for the world. Your dedication to freedom and to justice is truly inspiring.

For Ukraine and Belarus there is no other choice than to continue our fight. Because we fight not only for our sovereignty and survival as nations. We also fight for Europe, for the very values we hold dear.

We will not allow the evil empire to enslave us again. Belarusians and Ukrainians chose their path – it is a path to Europe. And neither tanks, nor rockets, not Wagner thugs will not be able to stop us in this difficult but rightful way.

Without free Belarus and Ukraine, Europe will not truly be free and safe.

Today, my beloved Belarus is seized by the criminal dictator Lukashenka who holds 9 million people as hostages.

My heart bleeds when I think of the political prisoners in Belarus. I think of my husband Siarhei, of our Nobel Peace prize Laureate Ales Bialiatski, and countless mothers, fathers, children – those behind bars and those waiting for their loved ones to return.

Their pain is our pain. Their fight is our fight. We cannot and will not let them down.

The regime is repressing people not only inside the country, but also outside. Last week's decree could deprive hundreds of thousands of Belarusians of legal documents, such as passports. It’s Lukashenka’s personal revenge on Belarusians who stood up against him.

I ask Sweden to keep the door open to Belarusians fleeing tyranny and assist those who already live here.

Today, being here, I feel your energy and solidarity. Let’s work towards a Europe that is free, just, and peaceful for all its people. For us, there is no other choice.

I call on Sweden to stand with Belarus. Assist our fight and give Ukraine every resource it needs to win. Together, we have the power to end tyranny, not just for now, but once and for all.

    Slava Ukraini!
    Zhyvie Belarus!

    Thank you.
