Belarus remains the only country in Europe where death sentences are still carried out. From October 5 to 10, the Viasna Human Rights Center is holding the Week Against the Death Penalty. The events, held ahead of the International Day Against the Death Penalty, will draw attention to why the state should not have the right to take a person’s life.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Human life is the highest value. The death penalty has no place in a democratic state governed by the rule of law.
The Week Against the Death Penalty is an opportunity to once again speak about the Belarus we want to see: a country where people’s lives and the right to life are protected by law.
I am grateful to Viasna human rights defenders, who have consistently worked for the abolition of the death penalty in Belarus for many years and have kept this issue in the public spotlight”.
