On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan.
She thanked Romania for its support for the Belarusian people and its firm position within the European Union and called for keeping Belarus on the European agenda and supporting the country’s democratic forces and civil society. President Nicușor Dan invited Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to visit Bucharest.
Ms. Tsikhanouskaya also held a separate meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Oana Țoiu. They discussed the release of political prisoners and international efforts in this regard, the EU’s sanctions policy against the regime, and accountability mechanisms for those responsible for repression. They also addressed support for independent media, human rights defenders, civil society, and repressed Belarusians in exile.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “I am grateful to Romania for its principled position and support for Belarusians. Today, it is particularly important to maintain European unity: to work for the release of political prisoners, continue pressure as long as repression persists, and at the same time support Belarusians. I look forward to continuing this conversation in Bucharest”.
