  • Audio guide in Belarusian and Grunwald commemorations: Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Grunwald Battle Museum Director Szymon Drej agreed on cooperation

    September 17, 2026

On September 15, as the Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met in Warsaw with historian Dr. Szymon Drej, who is the Director of the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald in Stębark.

The meeting was also attended by Yury Meliashkevich, who initiated the campaign to install a white-red-white flag at the Grunwald battlefield, and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Chief Advisor, Franak Viacorka.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked Szymon Drej for supporting the initiative to make the participation of warriors from the lands of present-day Belarus in the Battle of Grunwald and the annual commemorative events more visible.

“The Battle of Grunwald is one of the most important events in our history. It reminds us that Belarusian history is an integral part of European history. For many years, Belarusians have been coming to the Grunwald battlefield with white-red-white flags. For us, this place is just as important and symbolic as it is for Poles, Lithuanians, and Ukrainians. Through cooperation with the Museum, we want to make the Belarusian presence more visible and strengthen the ties between our peoples”, she noted.

The parties agreed to establish long-term cooperation, prepare a Belarusian version of the audio guide, and ensure the participation of Belarus’s democratic forces in the museum’s international events alongside partners from Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine.

Ahead of the next anniversary of the battle in July 2027, plans are underway to facilitate broader participation by the Belarusian community and Belarusian historical reenactors in the Grunwald commemorations.

The meeting participants also discussed a possible memorial at the Grunwald battlefield dedicated to warriors from the lands of present-day Belarus, as well as a flagpole bearing the white-red-white flag.

The Grunwald battlefield has official protected historic monument status in Poland under the name “Grunwald — Battlefield”. Therefore, the installation of new objects requires the relevant administrative procedures and approvals from cultural heritage protection authorities.
