  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s statement on the sanctions imposed by Ukraine against Aliaksandr Lukashenka

    February 18, 2026

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “This is a correct and timely decision by Ukraine. I thank President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his principled position. Lukashenka is not a legitimate leader. He has unlawfully seized power and serves Russia’s interests, not those of the Belarusian people. Belarusians are effectively held hostage by two dictators.

The sanctions imposed by Ukraine are sanctions against the dictator personally. He is assisting Russia in its criminal war, producing weapons, and must undoubtedly be held accountable under international law.

This is also a clear message to those surrounding Lukashenka: by helping him, you become accomplices to crimes. Impunity is what emboldens dictators. And today, Ukraine has demonstrated that there must be no impunity.

The war must be stopped, and peace and justice must be restored”.
