  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s statement on Donald Trump’s inauguration

    January 22, 2025

“President Trump was in office in the United States when our peaceful uprising began in 2020. It was during his term that the first sanctions were imposed against the Lukashenka regime and Ambassador Julie Fisher was appointed [as the Special Envoy for Belarus], with whom we worked closely in the following years. The new administration includes many individuals who are familiar with Belarus and support our fight for freedom.

Naturally, we have already been in touch with representatives of the new president’s team. Now, we need to reintroduce Belarus to President Trump and highlight its importance from a fresh perspective. We need to explain that an independent and free Belarus is strategically vital for peace and security throughout the region. Democratic change in our country aligns with the interests of the United States as well.

Our goal is to convey that Belarus and Ukraine are interconnected, that we are fighting the same enemy, and that without an independent Belarus, there will be constant threats to Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and the entire region. With Lukashenka surrendering our country to Putin, there will be ongoing border provocations, migration crises, and the risk of escalation.

In the context of negotiations on Ukraine, Belarus must not become a bargaining chip or a consolation prize for Putin. The United States’ stance will play a decisive role in this. Only a democratic Belarus can serve as a source of stability and peace and be a reliable partner for the United States”.
