  • “No expansionist ambitions of Russia can defeat the Ukrainian people”. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya on Ukraine’s Independence Day

    August 24, 2024

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed the people of Ukraine on the occasion of the country’s Independence Day:

    “Dear President Zelenskyy! Dear Ukrainians!

For over two and a half years now, the world has witnessed your daily resilience, strength of spirit, and dedication in the fight for freedom and independence.

By fearlessly defending your country from the aggressor, you inspire many nations, including Belarusians, to continue their fight. Your successes on the battlefield and in diplomacy, your unity, and self-organization have already become part of history books.

In recent weeks, you have managed to push the occupier back to its territory. The developments in the Kursk region have impressed even the greatest skeptics. You have also ratified the Rome Statute, taking a significant step towards restoring justice and facilitating accountability for perpetrators of crimes.

Even facing all the challenges of war, you abide by the law and your international commitments. And most importantly, you do not lose your humanity. Even when Russia bombs children’s hospitals. Even when it tries to leave Ukrainian cities with no electricity and heating and strip away faith and hope through propaganda. Even in these conditions, you demonstrate solidarity and mutual assistance and maintain optimism. Your struggle is a fight for the right to be yourselves, for the right to live in peace on your land. To live freely.

No expansionist ambitions of Russia can defeat the Ukrainian people. Your courage inspires all of us. And I am proud that Belarusian volunteers are fighting side by side with Ukrainians, for your freedom and ours. Because the fates of our countries are intertwined. There will be no free Belarus without a free Ukraine, just like there will be no safe Europe without a free Belarus.

We share not only common pages in history but also common values. Even such important words in our native languages as love, homeland, struggle, dignity, and independence sound similar.

As history shows, gaining independence is never easy. It must be defended, and you do so with great dignity. Your victory will be a victory over darkness and fear. And most importantly, over those trying to steal your independence.

Happy Independence Day and Glory to Ukraine!”
