  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with Czech President Miloš Zeman

    June 08, 2021

    Today, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman. Mr. Zeman began the meeting with the words of admiration and support of the Belarusians fighting for their freedom. The President of the Czech Republic noted that Belarus was the only issue uniting all the political forces of the Czech Republic and expressed his readiness to help. He agrees that regime isolation and pressure through EU sanctions can help free political prisoners and stop the violence.

    The leaders discussed:
    – the situation with the hijacking of the plane, tortures of Raman Pratasevich, and the massive attack on independent media;
    – the importance of organizing a national strike and working with the security forces;
    – the need to support civil society, independent media, and the Belarusian diaspora.

    The possibility of introducing broad national visa sanctions for regime henchmen, which could include thousands of names, including judges, prosecutors, security officers, and members of electoral commissions.

    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya also told Miloš Zeman about the fate of political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, whom he visited in Minsk in 2002.

    “We are grateful to the Czech Republic and the entire international community for supporting the Belarusian people in their struggle for democracy, but we are fully aware that this is primarily the task of the Belarusians themselves”, – stressed leader of democratic Belarus.
