  • “We must remain human”: Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya commented on criticism and what she would change in 2020

    April 02, 2024

In an interview with Belsat, the Belarusian leader shared her thoughts on criticism directed towards her, as well as discussed whether she would change something if she were to go back to 2020.

“I saw that many international leaders expressed words of support. This is not support for the leadership of a country that attacks the people in Ukraine and Belarus. In every speech or statement – both on the international stage and on social media – I express sympathy for Ukraine. Because this is our pain. I openly say that what Russians are doing in Ukraine is barbarism. But we must remain human”.

“The question of what I would change in 2020 always makes me wonder. Because I start to imagine what we could have done differently. Of course, from time to time, I thought, what if I hadn’t run in the elections instead of my husband – would things be different or not? What if we hadn’t united? What if I hadn’t left the country? You never know how history could have turned out. So you think: What if all Belarusians had taken to the streets to protest in 2006, in 2011? Why weren’t we all there? So I would go back not to 2020, but much earlier instead, to feel responsible for my country and to be alongside those who saw from the beginning what kind of dictatorship our country was turning into”.
