Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Lukashenka is trying to downplay the severity of foreign nuclear weapons being stationed in Belarus. However, his claims are once again proving to be untruthful. He is actually arguing with Khrenin and Shoigu, who on May 25 signed documents to give Moscow control over nuclear weapons on our territory, including its use.
One thing is clear: whether nuclear weapons in Belarus will be controlled by the Kremlin, Lukashenka, or by them together – their presence in our territory is very bad news for Belarusians. The threat posed by nuclear weapons and the presence of Russian troops to the country's security and the lives of the people has returned to Belarus. The same threat that we as a society consciously eliminated when we established Belarus' non-nuclear status in the Declaration of State Sovereignty of 1990 and the Constitution of 1994.
Lukashenko and Putin are routing our country to military confrontation with other states. But it is Lukashenka and imperial Russia that pose the greatest threat to the independence and security of Belarus. There are no other external military threats to our country. Every citizen of Belarus has the right to oppose this scenario, including the placement of foreign nuclear weapons. We, together with the United Transitional Cabinet and other forces working toward a democratic transition, are doing everything possible to draw international attention and efforts to resist this illegal stationing of nuclear weapons”.
