In an interview with Bild, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya shared her thoughts on the sentiment in Belarusian society and whether Lukashenka’s so-called election in 2025 can serve as a trigger to involve or reinvolve Belarusians in politics.
“The tension hasn’t eased since 2020. Perhaps we’ve seen peaks and troughs in this tension but Belarusian society is like a pot of boiling water. Everything is still alive within people, all the memories, all the emotions they felt. It’s all ready to burst out. We need some momentum, a new window of opportunity. When it becomes clear that this is it, we must all act. But, clearly, the ritual of the so-called election will not be such an opportunity. For Belarusians, it changes nothing; it’s not a shift in the situation. And Belarusians understand this. My responsibility is to ensure that Belarusians stay inspired and feel like a united nation until the moment when we will need everyone to get involved”.
