  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed the Croatian Parliament and met with its Speaker, the Croatian academic community, and Belarusian diaspora

    January 27, 2023

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković for not recognizing Lukashenka as president and spoke about the latest trials of rail partisans, TUT.by journalists, as well as trials in absentia of the Coordination Council and exiled athletes.

At a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Croatian Parliament, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya invited MPs to take patronage over political prisoners, organize internships for young Belarusians in the Parliament, conduct expert reviews of laws for the new Belarus, and support initiatives of Belarus’ democratic forces within the OSCE PA, the Council of Europe, as well as Euronest.

A group of Friends of Belarus will be formed in the Croatian parliament; it will include representatives of both the incumbent and opposition political parties. Such groups have been or are being created in 18 countries, from the USA to Georgia. Two meetings of representatives of groups from different countries are expected this year, offline and online, to develop a joint strategy vis-a-vis Belarus, bring democracy back to Belarus, and defend its independence.

Yesterday Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with the academic community and students of Croatia. About 100 people took part in the meeting, including the Belarusian diaspora. Now 9 students from Belarus are studying in Zagreb. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya called for allocating a number of enrollment openings in the fields of administration of government, public administration, international relations, as well as journalism and communications.
