  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya appointed Kristina Rikhter as Advisor on Legal Affairs

    Kristina Rikhter has been practicing law for 10 years, dealing in recent years with both national and international human rights mechanisms. Ms. Rikhter joined the Office in mid-2021. Kristina Rikhter, along with other lawyers, focused on Belarusians who fled to Poland from Ukraine and Belarus after the war and resolved problems and delays in procedures for legalizing their stay. She also coordinated the Alternative Report on the Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by the Republic of Belarus.

    In her new position as Advisor on Legal Affairs, Kristina Rikhter will first and foremost continue to coordinate the work on accountability for perpetrators of human rights violations. Cooperation with the United Transitional Cabinet and Legal Council will facilitate the use of the instruments of universal jurisdiction and other international mechanisms. Kristina Rikhter will defend the interests of Belarusians and, together with the Legal Council, deal with the legal aspects of documents regulating the future transition period.

    Kristina Rikhter will also be responsible for:

    – shaping the strategy for legal work of the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya;

    – working with other lawyers and organizations to prepare legal and regulatory instruments for the transition period and ensure justice and rehabilitation of politically persecuted persons;

    – facilitating the work on the special report on the issues faced by Belarusians in exile to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe;

    – cooperating with the Belarusian human rights community to effectively promote and defend human rights.
