  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya – in memory of Dmitry Stakhovsky

    May 26, 2021

«Today all of us have again learned bitter and shocking news. After an interrogation, 17-year-old Dmitry Stakhovsky committed suicide. He left a suicide note that clearly identified who is guilty in his death – the Investigative Committee.

«If I didn’t continue to be morally repressed, I wouldn’t have done such a terrible thing as suicide. But my strength was running low. And as you can see, I failed. I regret that I have lived so little. A couple of years ago, I was making plans for the future that I would go abroad again, live and work there. But life is so unpredictable. Or do you think I would ever think that I would be faced with that choice? It’s a hard choice. So to say that suicide is the answer to all your problems, I can’t. No, friends. It’s a bad choice. It’s a terrible choice. Live. Life must be valued. You will have one and the other».

Think about it: this was written by a 17-year-old boy who couldn’t withstand the pressure of an inhuman regime. Dima was an orphan and lived in a dormitory, which staff identified him as a protester. As a result, he became a criminal defendant, and as a result, he found no alternative but to commit suicide.

The regime continues to kill people. Indiscriminately, both protesters on the streets, and proud prisoners of conscience, and like Dima – who had recently made plans for the future and didn’t want to die.

We, Belarusians, can no longer save Dima. But we must save 9 million people, we must save ourselves as a nation. That such horror will never happen again».
