  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “It has been a year since my husband Siarhei Tsikhanouski was illegally sentenced to 18 years in prison”

    December 14, 2022

“Before that, he had spent more than a year and a half in the torturous conditions of the pre-trial detention center. Every day he spent there was a challenge for me, too. What do I tell our children when they ask where daddy is? What can I do to get him out of captivity?

I still don't know how to answer the key question: How is Siarhei? I barely receive any news. And often when I do receive something, I can’t share news other than bad ones such as Siarhei being deprived of his lawyer or placed in solitary confinement. After all, perhaps, seeing Sergei's strength, they might want to hurt him even more, make his conditions even more unbearable.

I live and work so that Siarhei, like other innocent people in prison, can be released as soon as possible. Of course, I miss Siarhei's support and charisma, his energy around me. I have to admit that I need to develop the traits that Siarhei possesses. To be more open in my work, “act tougher” to solve problems without losing my attention and care for those around me.

I know that many Belarusians feel the same emotions as I do. That's why today I want to support from the bottom of my heart everyone whose relative, friend, or acquaintance is in prison on cynical, far-fetched charges. Everyone who, like my husband, is imprisoned for their courage, integrity, and desire for a better life for their country. Sadly, there are many of us. But the good news is we have each other”.
