The regime in Belarus has announced three significant steps in education for 2024. Tatiana Shchyttsova, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Advisor on Education and Science, commented on these plans:
“The authorities are planning to introduce the following changes into the education system:
– Regardless of whether a student’s tuition is covered by themselves (their families) or the state budget, their contracts will specify the amount of compensation in case they refuse to work at the assigned place after graduation.
– The actual cost of education will increase, with a growth range of 3 to 15%.
– The responsibility for the quality of education will be increasingly shifted to students, not the universities.
Through these measures, the regime aims to collect more money from Belarusians and relieve universities of responsibility for the quality of education. The isolation from the international academic community, the dismissal of many teachers after 2020, and the lack of autonomy in our universities limit the chances of Belarusians to receive quality education without leaving the country”.
The way to guarantee professional development and a successful scientific career in today’s Belarus is self-education”.
Every month, the Office’s Education Team publishes the Asveta digest, covering new and relevant international support programs for Belarusian students and researchers. This resource provides numerous opportunities to pursue quality education in various fields.
