  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya – on the dismissed appeal in the case of Siarhei Tsikhanouski

    June 01, 2022

“Today, while I was on a visit, I heard that the court dismissed the appeal in the case of my husband Siarhei Tsikhanouski. That didn’t surprise me, as no one has faith in justice from such "hearings" anymore – and we have more than 1,215 cases of evidence of this.

I haven't seen Siarhei in two years, since May 29, 2020. Last week I recorded a video for that anniversary – and when it was finished, I sat down with my daughter to watch it. She looked at her daddy and cried. I understand why. But I read comments from Belarusians about Siarhei under this video – and they warm my heart. And if you miss Siarhei too – watch the new film by A Country to Live in to hear a lot of touching and important details about Siarhei from his friends and acquaintances.

Do I want to blame someone because we ended up here? Sometimes I feel like I do, but I understand that it's more because of fatigue and disappointment that our path was longer than we wanted it to be. Perhaps, it was supposed to be long from the beginning – but we didn't want to notice it.

But over these two years, we did not get to like the dictatorship, Lukashenka, and the cynical attitude towards people. We chose the future, not the past – irreversibly. So, we have no other option but to end up in the future. And along the way, to become more mature and courageous as a nation. Because the political prisoners are moving along that path now, and one of our main challenges is to be there for them”.
