  • Results of the Belarusian Anti-War Movement for May 19

    Any Belarusian can join the Movement and choose from numerous options to resist the war and Belarus' regime.  

    Here is an overview of the Movement on May 19. 

    Support for Ukrainians and Belarusians   

    • Belarusian Volha Adamovich from Belarus made her house in Poland a shelter for Ukrainians, where she has already hosted over 2,500 people.
    • Belarusian and Ukrainian artists will give a benefit concert in support of Ukraine in Vilnius on May 21. 
    • Mikalai Zolatau, a football player for the Belarusian national team, signed the Athletes' Anti-War Declaration and urged other players to join in.
    • The Viasna Human Rights Center compiled a report on criminal persecution in Belarus for 2021-2022. After studying the trials, human rights defenders concluded that Belarus’ legal system is fully repurposed for repression.
    • The Belarusian Council for Culture sent an appeal to the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science to prevent it from removing works by Belarusian writers Vasil Bykau, Yanka Kupala and Siarhei Zakonnikau from school curriculum as part of derussification. 
    • The ŻYVI Foundation sent humanitarian aid to civilians in Ukraine. 
    • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with Queen Letizia and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain. She spoke about the situation in Belarus, sanctions policy against the regime, and the Spanish government's assistance to Belarusians. 
    • Since the beginning of the war, a Belarusian, using his car painted in Ukraine’s national flag colors, has transferred 15,000 Ukrainians from the Polish-Ukrainian border.
    • A shelter for refugees from Ukraine and Belarus opened in Warsaw under the patronage of A Country to Live in Foundation (Belarus), Progetto Sud (Italy),  and the Belarusian diaspora in Italy. 
    • Politzek.me, a platform to support political prisoners, developed a kit for writing letters. Its templates will help easily write letters of support to political prisoners. 
    • Pavel Latushka held a meeting with Assistant Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Sandra McCardell. The Canadian Foreign Ministry recognizes Lukashenka as an accomplice to Russia’s crimes in Ukraine. 
    • On Saturday, May 21, at the Center for Belarusian Solidarity, Belarusians will be weaving camouflage nets for Belarusian military volunteers in Ukraine. Anyone can join.

     Sabotage

    • The Hajun monitoring project released an operational summary of the military equipment movements in Belarus and reviewed the regime’s propaganda about the war in Ukraine. The propagandists talked about “righteous” and “evil” Ukraininas, with the latter opposing Russia’s influence.

    Resistance

    • People in Belarus continue leaving anti-war messages for other Belarusians and the regime. 
    • Minsk residents held a picket to protest against arbitrary arrests of medics in Belarus and demand release of politically imprisoned doctors.

    Awareness campaign

    • Since the war in Ukraine started, the Honest People community has been countering state propaganda. Its followers communicate the truth to elderly family members, distribute leaflets, and teach their loved ones to obtain information from the independent media.
    • Telegram blocked already the 8th channel of GUBAZiK, a regime “law enforcement” agency heavily involved in political repressions, for inciding hatred, promoting torture and violence. 
    • More than 1,500 people have been subjected to repression and violence for protesting against the war in Ukraine. RFE/RL Belarus service compiled all known cases of persecution.
